TELEGRAM RETRANSMISSION CENTRE TRC

The TRC was located in Cardinal House and was the next step in the automation of the international telegraph services after the MRC. The use of stored programm control and computer technology considerably extended the capability of the service in terms of capacity, electronic storage of forwarded telegrams, telegram retrieval and also allowed automatic message acceptance and delivery to the Telex and Gentex services.

The Philips DS714 system and peripherals were located on the first floor cardinal House. The operational activities were located on the fifth floor along with a small workshop run by Charles Yates & Co.

The TRC went into service on 28th April 1975 and closed on the last Friday of June 1991. This photograph shows the processor being switched off for the last time, We have heard from Brian Fretwell that the engineer who switched off the TRC processor for the last time was Dave Lyon - Thanks Brian. A report from Ted Copper who was present, said that the TRC had the last laugh as pressing halt on processor 1 caused the 2nd hotstandby processor to automatically take over. So Dave had to switch off twice....

Thanks to Terry Hogsden for the TRC information and photographs. Click on the following links for more TRC photographs
